United Kingdom’s Imports of Industrial Robots For Multiple Uses
In 2024, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of industrial robots for multiple uses, when their volume decreased by -9.6% to 5.8K units. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 6.4K units in 2023, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, industrial robot imports dropped to $150M in 2024. Overall, imports, however, posted a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 48%. Sweden (784 units), Italy (701 units) and Denmark (612 units) were the main suppliers of industrial robot imports to the UK, together accounting for 36% of total imports. Germany, the United States, France, Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, China, Japan and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 49%.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Finland (with a CAGR of +77.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest industrial robot suppliers to the UK were Sweden ($20M), Italy ($18M) and Denmark ($16M), with a combined 36% share of total imports. Germany, the United States, France, Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, China, Japan and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 49%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Finland, with a CAGR of +166.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
The average industrial robot import price stood at $26 thousand per unit in 2024, which is down by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2023 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $33 thousand per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Canada ($26 thousand per unit) and Belgium ($26 thousand per unit), while the price for France ($26 thousand per unit) and Finland ($26 thousand per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+50.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Exports

In 2024, shipments abroad of industrial robots for multiple uses decreased by -35.2% to 5.6K units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 127%. The exports peaked at 10K units in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, industrial robot exports declined to $135M in 2024. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $161M in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports By Country
The United States (2.5K units) was the main destination for industrial robot exports from the UK, with a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, industrial robot exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (407 units), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (322 units), with a 5.8% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States totaled +27.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+21.7% per year) and France (+29.3% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($61M) remains the key foreign market for industrial robots for multiple uses exports from the UK, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($9.9M), with a 7.3% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 5.8% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States stood at +25.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+20.3% per year) and France (+28.1% per year).
Export Prices By Country
The average industrial robot export price stood at $24 thousand per unit in 2024, rising by 34% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 146%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $49 thousand per unit. From 2018 to 2024, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Switzerland ($25 thousand per unit) and the Netherlands ($24 thousand per unit), while the average price for exports to India ($24 thousand per unit) and Sweden ($24 thousand per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (-0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
