Google’s NotebookLM now has Apple and Android mobile apps
Imagine this: you’ve got a stack of reading to catch up on… market research reports, scientific papers, industry news, podcasts. And, you don’t want to spend the time to slog through it all. What if you could have a pair of smart podcasters digest and summarize all that information for you, focusing on the aspects you are interested in? You could turn your drive time or morning walk into a productivity boost.
Now, imagine that as you were listening to your custom podcast, you could interrupt the hosts and ask about something they said, or even about a topic they didn’t mention. Science fiction, right?
As wild as it sounds, Google is enabling this. The new NotebookLM mobile app for Apple and Android does just that. You can upload your content, up to 50 sources, tell the AI hosts what to focus on, and they’ll create your custom podcast, known as an audio overview. As you are listening, you can interrupt to ask questions. You can ask them to clarify or expand on something they said, or ask about something they didn’t mention.
Most of us struggle to consume all the content we need to stay informed. Whether it’s industry reports, scientific papers, or competitor news, there’s never enough time. Google’s NotebookLM might change that equation with their new mobile app rollout.
Audio That Understands What You Want
NotebookLM has become a popular tool for processing complex information since its launch, helping millions of users understand difficult concepts and extract insights from masses of content. The mobile app now extends its utility as a productivity tool.
The standout feature is the ability to listen to Audio Overviews while on the go, even when you are offline. This lets busy professionals turn their commute or workout into productive learning time.
Unlike standard audiobooks or podcasts, NotebookLM’s audio experience is interactive. You can interrupt the narration to ask questions about the content, similar to how you might pause a conversation with a colleague to get clarification on a point.
Seamless Content Integration
For anyone dealing with multiple information sources, the app’s sharing capabilities are particularly valuable. You can now share content directly to NotebookLM from any app on your device, whether it’s a website, PDF, or video.
This means the next time you’re browsing competitor research or industry reports on your phone, you can instantly add them to NotebookLM for AI-powered analysis. The app promises to add more input types over time.
Why This Matters For Marketers
The ability to consume and understand complex information quickly gives marketers a competitive edge. When you can listen to summaries of research studies, customer feedback, or market reports during your morning coffee walk, you gain valuable time without sacrificing understanding.
CMOs and other leaders could use this capability to share complex information with their team. If you distribute long videos, complex reports, or scientific papers, they will be ignored or, at best, skimmed. A ten minute audio with question/answer ability will be far more impactful.
The Multitasking Advantage
The app allows for background listening, making it ideal for multitasking. CMOs and marketing leaders can absorb information while handling other tasks, effectively turning “lost” time into learning opportunities.
The interactive nature of the experience means you’re not just passively consuming content—you’re engaging with it in a way that enhances understanding and retention.
The audio overviews could even be used for customer communication, although the limited control over the output limits this use for now.
Are Video Overviews Next?
Google indicates that this initial mobile release includes the core features of NotebookLM, with additional refinements coming in the months ahead. For marketing leaders already using the web version, the mobile app provides welcome continuity across devices.
Rumors suggest that video overviews could be coming soon. It’s been possible to turn audio overviews into video, but it has required manual editing. This has been tricky because the two AI hosts are combined in a single audio track. For Google to add video for each host should pose no great challenges.
NotebookLM Is A Unique AI Tool
The major LLMs – ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc., all have unique features, but for many can seem interchangeable. NotebookLM stands apart for its ability to use only the information you provide to summarize and create many types of content. Multilingual output and interactive audio add to its unique capabilities.
For those who haven’t tried NotebookLM yet, the addition of the mobile app might be the tipping point that makes it worth exploring.
Today, competitive advantage often goes to those who can process information most effectively. Tools that make content more accessible without sacrificing depth of understanding can provide a powerful boost.
