Denmark Donates Satellite Communication Services to Ukraine through European Defence Agency

Denmark has committed to providing satellite communication services to Ukraine’s armed forces through the European Defence Agency (EDA). Announced on 14 July 2025, this donation directly addresses Ukraine’s critical need for reliable satellite-based communications amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Denmark Strengthens Support for Ukraine’s Defence

This marks the first instance of Denmark contributing European-manufactured satellite services via an EU framework. The initiative signifies Denmark’s continued commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s military capabilities.

Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the significance of the donation: “I am proud that Denmark is contributing to Ukraine’s space-based defence with this donation.” Poulsen highlighted that space is increasingly a focal point for modern defence policy, underscoring its strategic importance.

Satellite Terminals to Provide Crucial Connectivity

The donated package comprises specialized receiving terminals, specifically requested by Ukraine. These terminals are essential for establishing secure, stable, and reliable satellite communications, which are critical to modern military operations.

The satellite terminals will notably enhance the Ukrainian military’s operational efficiency and capability, thereby strengthening their resilience against the ongoing Russian aggression. According to Danish authorities, the terminals will provide robust and secure communications, which are vital for successful military coordination and execution.

European Cooperation and Strategic Autonomy in Space

Denmark’s decision to contribute satellite communication services via the EDA framework signals deeper European defence collaboration. The EDA anticipates that Denmark’s initiative may encourage other EU member states to consider similar contributions.

Minister Poulsen remarked on this cooperative dimension: “In close cooperation with the EU’s Defence Agency, Denmark has now helped strengthen Ukraine’s satellite-based communication in their defence against Russia.” He added that satellite solutions hold significant potential for reinforcing Ukrainian, Danish, and broader European security.

Furthermore, the donation aligns with broader European ambitions for technological autonomy in space, reinforcing Europe’s collective capabilities in the critical space domain.
